Marta Smaldone was born and raised in Italy, where she started her photographic practice before studying at the Superior School of Image Arts LE 75 in Brussels, Belgium.
She is deeply interested in exploring cultural identities, humanity, and the relationship between individuals and the world around them.
Marta started documenting the immigrant experience in 2007. In her project, 'Etat de transit,' she explored the manifestation of restriction and freedom among sub-Saharan migrants stuck in Morocco, the land of "transit" to Europe. Her project depicted contrasting themes of hope and darkness.
Since then, memory, place, and connection have become recurring themes in her visual language.
She currently resides and works between Miami and Mexico City.
